Daily Schedule
Our Daily Schedule is designed to build on basic skills and meet the North Carolina Course of Study while also offering great flexibility through the interest-based project approach. Each classes schedule varies a little but the overall schedule is:
8:30 - 9:00
Morning Meeting
Students begin their day in a small group time that helps to set them up for success. During this time, we will also focus on our 5 PBS domains during this time. Students will proceed through 4 activities everyday: (1) Greeting, (2) Sharing, (3) Group activity, (4) News and Announcements.
9:00 - 10:00
Focus on Literacy
To support developmentally appropriate English and Spanish skills as well as independent success in the project work, students focus on working with language. We believe strongly that students need a dedicated time for working with words. In addition, students have the opportunity to read (self-selected & guided) as well as write on a daily basis at different times of the day as they progress through silent sustained reading and write in their project exploration.
10:00 - 10:15
Break
10:15 - 11:15
Focus on Numeracy
To support developmentally appropriate mathematics skills and
independent success in the project work, students will focus on numeracy
for an hour each day. Students will also utilize this time to analyze
their project data and reflect on frequent open-ended questions that
challenge their mathematical thinking.
11:15 - 12:00
Independent Choice Based on Interests
Whether students want to explore theater, art, design, Odyssey of the Mind, music, dance or something else, this daily opportunity will allow students to focus on an area of interest. We will also tap into the skills and loves of our staff and parents to offer interesting exploration classes that foster a love of learning.
12:00 - 12:30
Lunch
12:30 - 1:00
Silent Sustained Reading with a book of choice
1:00 - 1:15
Recess
1:15 - 2:20
Project Exploration Time
This is a dedicated daily time for students to explore their own questions. We will emphasize meeting the state standards in Science and Social Studies during this time. As you can imagine, the opportunities for authentic exploration and student generated hypotheses are endless.
2:20 - 2:30
End of the Day Meeting
This is a check-in time for students and close the day in a meaningful manner.
